Ce motif, dessiné de manière à ressembler à des fraises, a en fait une longue histoire dans le style “Naruko Honjo” : il était déjà employé il y a plusieurs générations. On l’appelle “kasuri” et il évoque la technique de l’ikat, où les fils sont teints avant d’être tissés.
Saito Sachiko est une artisane installée tout récemment. Elle travaille le style Naruko, dans sa variation “Honjo”, produite à Yurihonjo, préfecture d’Akita.

This pattern, designed to resemble strawberries, actually has a long history in the Naruko Honjo style: it was used generations ago. It is called "kasuri" and evokes the ikat technique, where the threads are dyed before being woven.
Saito Sachiko is a recently settled kokeshi maker; she works in a subtype of Naruko style, called “Honjo”. It grew from a local craftsman who was taught Naruko style, and developed then his own variant. From master to apprentices the craft went on, and Honjo kokeshi has now 4 active makers.
