J’ai demandé à Saito Sachiko de refaire deux modèles historiques du style de kokeshi auquel elle s’est formée, le style Naruko de Yuri-honjo. Celui-ci porte un motif appelé igeta, lié au textile, qui représente le croisement des fils dans un tissu.
L’artisanat contemporain de la kokeshi traditionnelle s’est tourné presque tout entièrement vers des formes et motifs plus artistiquess inspirés par le parcours de chacun. Il est désormais plus rare de voir la génération actuelle d’artisans réinterpréter les modèles anciens - tandis que cela a été le mode principal de fonctionnement de cet art durant des décennies.
Saito Sachiko est une artisane installée tout récemment. Elle travaille le style Naruko, dans sa variation “Honjo”, produite à Yurihonjo, préfecture d’Akita.

I asked Saito Sachiko to remake two historical models of the style of kokeshi she trained in, the Naruko style of Yuri-honjo. This style features a textile motif called igeta, which represents the crossing of threads in a fabric.
The contemporary craft of traditional kokeshi has turned almost entirely to more artistic forms and motifs inspired by individual experiences. It is now rarer to see the current generation of craftsmen reinterpreting the old patterns - whereas this was the main mode of operation of this art for decades.
Saito Sachiko is a recently settled kokeshi maker; she works in a subtype of Naruko style, called “Honjo”. It grew from a local craftsman who was taught Naruko style, and developed then his own variant. From master to apprentices the craft went on, and Honjo kokeshi has now 4 active makers.
